Are Plug-in Solar Kits Legal in the UK?

Plug-in solar kits are not made legal by a single UK “legalisation” law. Their use sits within existing electrical safety, equipment, and electricity-network rules. A compliant kit must be suitable for the installation, connected safely, and used in a way that meets the requirements of the relevant network operator.

For many small, single-phase systems, the key route is Engineering Recommendation G98. G98 covers the connection of type-tested, low-voltage microgenerators without a prior connection application, provided the equipment and installation meet the applicable requirements.

What G98 means for a plug-in solar kit

G98 is a connection notification process for approved small-scale generation. It is not a product safety mark and it does not make every solar kit automatically compliant.

When assessing a kit, look for clear evidence that:

  • the inverter is approved for the relevant UK grid-connection standard;
  • the complete equipment is suitable for the intended connection method;
  • the installation follows the manufacturer’s instructions and electrical safety requirements; and
  • any required notification is made to the local distribution network operator (DNO).

The exact process can depend on the equipment, property, connection, and DNO. A retailer’s claim that a kit is “G98 compliant” should therefore be backed by identifiable certification and clear installation guidance.

Why 800W appears so often

The commonly referenced limit for a single plug-in microgenerator is 800W AC in Great Britain. This refers to the inverter’s maximum AC output, not necessarily the combined DC rating of the solar panels.

A kit may therefore pair an inverter limited to 800W AC with panels rated above 800W DC. The larger panel array can help the inverter produce useful power for more hours across changing daylight conditions, while the inverter remains within its AC output limit.

This distinction matters when comparing kits: panel wattage and inverter output describe different parts of the system.

What “plug-in” does not mean

Plugging a system into a socket does not remove the need for a safe electrical assessment. Users should not assume that any outdoor socket, extension lead, or household circuit is suitable. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use a qualified electrician where the installation, property, or local requirements call for one.

You should also check the current guidance from your DNO. Rules, notification routes, and technical requirements can change, and the relevant organisation may differ depending on where the property is located.

A practical buying checklist

Before buying a kit, check:

  1. The inverter’s AC output and UK grid-connection certification.
  2. Whether the supplier explains the G98 notification process.
  3. The installation method, socket requirements, and cable guidance.
  4. Whether the kit is suitable for your property and intended use.
  5. The supplier’s warranty, technical documentation, and support.

Price per watt is useful for an initial comparison, but compliance evidence and installation suitability should come first. A cheaper kit is not better value if its documentation is incomplete or it cannot be safely connected at your property.
