Consumer Unit & RCD Compatibility for UK Plug-in Solar
Connecting micro-generation devices to standard domestic ring mains requires verifying that your home’s consumer unit (fuse box) provides appropriate safety protection.
Electrical Safety Mandates
- RCD Protection: The socket circuit supplying the plug-in solar kit must be protected by a Residual Current Device (RCD) or Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection (RCBO).
- RCD Type: Modern solar microinverters require Type A or Type B RCD protection. Older Type AC RCDs can blind or fail to trip in the presence of smooth DC residual currents generated by inverter equipment.
Socket Circuit Rules
- Direct Socket Connection: Plug-in kits must be connected directly into a permanently installed BS 1363 double or single wall socket.
- No Extension Leads: Do not connect microinverters through extension cords, multi-way adapters, or smart plugs not rated for continuous bidirectional current.
- Spur & Ring Load Limits: Ensure the target socket circuit is in good condition, with tight terminal connections and no signs of thermal damage.
